Types of timber benchtops

  • Kitchen benchtops: solid hardwood tops made to fit your layout
  • Island benchtops: a statement centrepiece for your kitchen
  • Waterfall edge benchtops: the top flows down the sides in a continuous grain
  • Single slab or glue-laminated: a single solid slab, or several solid timber pieces glue-laminated together for wider-than-standard widths

Thickness varies to suit your design, from standard profiles to thick slab tops that make a real feature.

New or existing kitchen

Whether you have an existing kitchen or are installing a completely new one, we can fit our benchtops over your existing or new cabinetry.

Choose from a range of Australian hardwoods

Red cedar, blackbutt, tallowood, silky oak, red gum, she oak, brush box, blue gum, bloodwood and more. We’ll help you choose the right timber based on durability and colour. We keep slabs ready to go, so there’s no long wait.

Drying and finishing

Properly dried timber is essential for a benchtop that stays stable. Depending on the job, we either air dry the timber and then kiln dry it to 10–12% moisture, which takes less than 5 months instead of the 2.5 to 4 years natural drying can take, or we use a specially designed kiln that can fast-dry thick slabs in days.

Benchtops are typically finished with tung oil, which seals the timber and protects it from daily wear while bringing out its natural grain.

Sink and stove top cut-outs

  • Option 1: send us a template of your sink and stove top (it can be posted) and where the cut-outs should go, and we’ll cut them before delivery.
  • Option 2: the cut-outs can be done after installation, by us or your cabinetmaker or builder, to guarantee the exact position.

Project: Blackbutt kitchen benchtops

For this kitchen, we selected a Blackbutt log, probably more than 200 years old, and set up a mobile sawmill to cut it into slabs 120 mm thick and over 700 mm wide. The slabs were fast-dried in our specially designed kiln in just 4 days, then milled to the client’s exact sizes: a 2000 mm+ benchtop and two 1100 mm tops, each 650 mm wide and 115 mm thick. The client wanted a darker timber, so we used a brown Japan stain with natural eucalyptus oil to keep the timber’s feel and scent while protecting it. From felling the log to delivering and installing the benchtops took under a month.
